Article: Empty properties

Empty PropertiesWhat is an empty property?

For this particular web page an empty property is a dwelling that a Council tenant has left.

Who deals with empty properties?

The Housing Management Officer takes account of the likelihood of theft/vandal damage and where necessary takes all reasonable steps to ensure that empty/ void council properties are secure against unauthorised access and occupancy, theft and vandalism by taking appropriate measures for each individual property.

How do we deal with them?

Void property inspections are carried out following receipt of keys. The visiting officer checks the property is secure. The Visiting Officer will take account of the likelihood of theft/vandal damage in each individual case and will take all reasonable steps to ensure that voids are secure against unauthorised access and occupancy, theft and vandalism.

We will secure properties the same day we become aware that a property is insecure.

Who can I report issues to?

Please call your local Barnsley Connects Office on 01226 775555.

How can I help you?

Empty council homes attract thieves and vandalism and affect everybody. Most tenants give us notice when they are planning to move out. However, some simply 'abandon' their home leaving it vulnerable to criminals. You can help us tackle this problem by telling us if you think someone has abandoned a council home together with information on their forwarding address if known. Neighbours can also help by keeping their eye on vacant council properties and reporting any crime or vandalism to the Police or your local Barnsley Connects Office.

You can also assist us by insuring that if you intend moving home, you inform us at your earliest convenience and hand your keys in on the date arranged.

When will you secure the property?

We aim to secure vulnerable properties the same day as they become vacant or the same day of us becoming aware that properties are insecure.
