Article: Berneslai Homes takes its tenants surfing

Pupils from Kirk Balk School and residents from Saville Court take part in Silver Surfers Day 2010Berneslai Homes hosted their first Silver Surfers Day on Friday 21st May. The day was delivered in partnership with Kirk Balk Secondary School and tenants from the Saville Court Sheltered Housing Scheme.

Silver Surfers Day is a nationally recognised annual event to promote the use of digital technologies by older people and has been running since 2002.  The aim is to support people and organisations all over the UK to open their doors and give local older people a taste of what the digital world has to offer them.  The event at Saville Court paired up young people from the school with the tenants and helped them to complete a variety of basic tasks in the aim of understanding computers and the internet, a little bit more.

Local children and Saville Court residents take part in Silver Surfers Day 2010Leon Sidebottom, Community Engagement Officer at Berneslai Homes adds, ”The Silver Surfer Day has helped the elderly participants overcome their fears of computers and the internet and encouraged them to use computers for the benefit of themselves and their lifestyles.”

The young people involved worked with the tenants on a one to one basis.  This helped to bring together different generations of the community and helped them to create positive relationships.
