Berneslai Homes organised a meeting on the 14th August, at Sheffield Road Baptist Church to drum up support from residents living in the area to form a Tenants and Residents Association.
The meeting was well attended and a committee has now been formed.
One of the main issues residents were concerned about were problems relating to parking by non-residents in the multi-storey flats car parks. This makes it difficult for people living in the flats, many of whom are disabled, to actually park near their homes. Residents living in the flats off Wood Street who are also members of the new committee are experiencing the same problems.
Joan Gaines, Community Development Officer at Berneslai Homes adds, “We now have 26 Tenants and Residents Associations (TARA’s) operating across the Borough working closely with officers and Local Members, in trying to improve things in the areas where they live. These groups are made up of volunteers who act as a ‘voice’ for those living in the areas they represent. Not everyone has the confidence to stand up and voice their opinions –members of the TARAs speak out on behalf of those who are less confident, they are the real heroes on the estates because they give so much of their free time to help improve things for others.”
A further meeting of the TARA is planned for mid- September. If anyone lives in the area and wishes to become a member of the group and is interested in attending the next meeting please contact Joan Gaines on Tel: 01226 774379 or email: joangaines@berneslaihomes.co.uk.
