This week over 2,000 Berneslai Homes tenants have been asked for their say on the future of the Cooker Scheme.
The Cooker Scheme has been in operation for many years and is offered to Berneslai Homes tenants who are over 60. Customers currently pay a weekly rate of £0.93 and are provided with an electric or gas cooker, which is safety checked annually and any repairs carried out free of charge.
Over the last 10 years the weekly cost of the cooker scheme has only increased by £0.13, which is well below inflation and as a result Berneslai Homes can no longer continue to run the scheme at the current price.
A questionnaire has been posted to members of the scheme asking for their views on what their preferred options are for the future.
Steve Wilson, Asset Manager of Berneslai Homes adds, The reason we need to change the scheme is that it costs us more to repair and replace the cookers than we collect from the weekly charge. We have to meet this shortfall from the repairs budget, which reduces the number of general repairs we can do. It also means that a proportion of everyones rent, even those who are not members of scheme, goes towards the cost of running the scheme.
