Trainee joiners Richard Care, Paul Wright and Tom Wood are three of six apprentices working on several housing refurbishment schemes which Lovell is currently carrying out for Berneslai Homes, an Arms Length Management Organisation responsible for managing homes on behalf of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

In addition to their work on site, Richard and Paul, both 19, attend Dearne Valley College in Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham, on a day release basis where they are studying for an NVQ Level 3 qualification in carpentry and joinery, while Tom, also 19, attends a similar course at Barnsley College.

Richard, who lives in Darfield, joined Lovell after leaving school in 2005. He is currently based at the Coniston Avenue site in Staincross, where the company is carrying out refurbishments of tenants properties for Berneslai Homes.

I hadnt thought about a career in construction before, but I saw an advert for the course at Dearne Valley College and it sounded interesting, says Richard. I passed the CITB-ConstructionSkills exam to get onto the course and got the opportunity to join Lovell from there.

Paul, who lives in Conisbrough, joined Lovell in 2005 after a spell working for a local housebuilder. He is currently working on a similar housing refurbishment scheme at the Locke Road site in Dodworth.

One of my friends was already doing a course at Dearne Valley College and recommended it to me, explains Paul. I was already doing some building work, so I knew some of the basics. The course made me aware of the opportunities available to apprentices and I joined Lovell after I had finished the first year of my NVQ studies.

Tom, who lives in Staincross, began his construction career by studying architecture and construction design before switching to a course in joinery and carpentry. He joined Lovell in 2005.

I studied woodwork when I was at school and wanted to pursue it as a career when I left, says Tom. I secured a placement with Lovell and have been fortunate to learn a variety of different carpentry and joinery skills already.

Richard, Paul and Tom have all been carrying out a variety of work during their apprenticeships, such as fitting kitchens, repairing floor joists and repairing bath panels. And, once their studies are complete, the trio are hoping to continue their careers with Lovell.

I want to gain as many joinery qualifications as I can and continue to build up my experience on site, says Paul. With the type of refurbishment works we are involved in, we have to use so many different joinery skills and you are always learning something new.

Everyone on site has been very encouraging and keen to help if there is something Im unsure of, adds Richard. Its reassuring to know that if you get stuck, there is always somebody on hand to advise you.

I enjoy my work because Im constantly learning new things and no two jobs are the same, says Tom. Ive always wanted to have my own business and Im hoping that I will eventually be able to achieve that.

Bringing in more young people with the correct skills is vital to the future of the construction industry, explains Lovell regional training advisor Sharon Tyer. We currently have a number of apprentices working for us across Yorkshire and Richard, Paul and Tom are excellent role models for others to follow.

Stephen Davis, acting chief executive at Berneslai Homes says: The Decent Homes scheme isnt just improving homes across Barnsley, its giving extra opportunities for local people like these apprentices to secure employment and develop skills which ensure they have a brighter future.
