HRH the Duke of Gloucester visited Barnsley on Wednesday, 5 September to meet victims of the recent flooding and to speak to people involved in the recovery efforts.
He arrived at Burton Grange Community Centre, Wike Road, Lundwood, at 10.55am, where he was greeted by David Moody, the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire. Mr Moody then presented Leader of Barnsley Council Cllr Steve Houghton, chief executive Phil Coppard, and Chris Darby, local impact officer who worked with the community during the height of the floods, who then escorted HRH throughout the remainder of the visit.
HRH met volunteers from the community centre and families who were affected by the floods before he departed for the Town Hall.
At the Town Hall HRH was greeted by the High Sherriff for South Yorkshire and Chairman of South Yorkshire Community Foundation, Colonel Jonathon Hunt OBE TD DL. The Mayor Cllr Len Picken and consort Mrs Janet Henson then introduced and accompanied HRH to the reception rooms for lunch, where people responsible for the flood fund delivery and members of the Flood Fund Committee were present. HRH was then introduced to the Master Cutler of Hallamshire Alan Reid.
HRH was then seated at a table where he will got chance to discuss the effects of the floods, the fund, and the effects both have had on the Barnsley area. He then signed both the South Yorkshire Community Foundation and Barnsley Council’s visitors’ book before departing at 12.40pm.
