Apprentices Celebrate Their Success

Berneslai Homes celebrated their third Annual Apprentice Awards last week at Shaw Lane Rugby Club.  The awards were sponsored by MC Engineering, DR Electrical, PTS – Plumbing Trade Supplies, DG Decorators and Berneslai Homes.

The winner of the overall 2008 ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award was Lee Duty.  Year 1 winners were announced as: 1st prize Nina Rhodes and 2nd Matthew Williamson.  Year 2 winners were:  1st prize Edward Hartley and 2nd prize Thomas Cousins.  Year 3/ final year winners were:  1st prize Luke Oliver and 2nd prize Gareth Neesam.  Mentor of the year was awarded to Terry Lawerence.   (You can download the Annual Apprentice Awards 2008 photos).

The awards were judged by Construction Services Manager Gary Williams and Elaine Marsh from Barnsley Federation of Tenants and Residents.  Gary adds, “We would like to thank our apprentices for all their hard work and dedication and we are proud of their achievements.  We are also extremely grateful to their mentors for keeping them focused and motivated. ”

The Construction Services Apprenticeship Scheme offers local people a full range of general construction trades and at anyone time may employ up to 27 apprentices. They are extremely pro-active in providing work based mentoring, work experience placements and re-training assistance through local schools, training colleges and new skills agencies across a wide range of craft skills.

The annual recruitment of apprentices starts in March and each apprentice has an assigned mentor, on the job training and study at college for the NVQ Level 2/3.
