Barnsley's second extracare scheme almost complete
Barnsley's second Extracare scheme, Westmeads, at Meadstead Drive, Royston, is nearly complete. It will provide 50 new two bedroomed homes for people over 55 years and opens in April.
Councillor Newman the Cabinet Spokesperson for development and a local Royston ward councillor said “This scheme builds on the success of Lavender Court at Kendray which is described by residents as like living in a first class hotel. It will have fantastic accommodation, with superb facilities and is part of Barnsley Council’s ongoing commitment to improve services for older people across the borough”.
Councillor Newman added, “We have worked very closely with South Yorkshire Housing Association, the owners of the scheme, and our other partners on the project Barnsley Primary Care Trust, and Berneslai Homes. The scheme has been developed at a cost of over £6m, and will serve the North East of the Borough. We hope to extend the provision shortly as we have submitted a further bid for resources to provide another eight bungalows to be linked to this scheme”
Extracare housing, also called very sheltered housing, is increasingly popular. It offers different levels of care and housing support under one roof and provides the option for residents to enjoy communal facilities within the scheme, some of which will be available to the wider community. This will include a restaurant, laundry facilities, hairdressing and a range of informal and organised activities.
Westmeads will have 50 individual apartments all with two bedrooms for Barnsley residents or those with a local connection with Barnsley who are over 55 years.
