Berneslai Homes has this week announced that they have successfully registered as a partner to deliver the National Affordable Housing Programme.
Berneslai Homes submitted the application to the Housing Corporation in April and can now apply for grants in the future for the development of new social housing and low cost home ownership. They are only one of 16 Arms Length Management Organisations in the UK to be successful. Bids can be in their own right or in partnership with Housing Associations or private developer partners. Berneslai Homes will use this and their accreditation as an approved landlord to continue to deliver and improve the housing service. In today’s difficult housing market this news is important for both Berneslai Homes and Barnsley residents, as it widens the opportunity to deliver more affordable housing in Barnsley.
Berneslai Homes Chief Executive Helen Correy says, “We are pleased to be recognised by the Housing Corporation as an organisation with appropriate skills and capable of delivering new social housing. Our Board and staff are looking forward to working with the Council and partners to explore all options to deliver more affordable homes over the next few years”.
BMBC Assistant Director Steve Jagger MBE adds, “The Council welcomes this as a positive step taken by Berneslai Homes as part of exploring how we can accelerate the provision of more affordable homes in the borough, and Berneslai Homes’ intention to become one of our future development partners. This is a first step and a significant amount of work will be required to see if new development opportunities exist and provide value for money. The Council is committed to exploring all options with all its partners to delivering more affordable homes and will continue to work closely with Berneslai Homes over the next few years to achieve this”.
