This week Berneslai Homes were presented with an award from the Tenant Participatory Advisory Service (TPAS) for delivering an excellent resident involvement service. This makes them only the third ALMO (arms length management organisation) in the UK to receive this coveted award.
The award was presented by TPAS Chief Executive Michelle Reid at an event held on 6th May at the Metrodome. The event also included an interactive workshop where tenants were asked to give their views on the service improvements that were recommended by TPAS to Berneslai Homes during their assessment.
Michelle Reid, TPAS Chief Executive adds, "I take my TPAS hat off to Berneslai Homes and their tenants for the huge amount of work in receiving this award. They have proven to be a good listener and have a great ability to respond to views, suggestions and criticism from their customers."
TPAS is the leading national tenant participation organisation working to promote tenant empowerment. The TPAS Kite Mark lasts for three years and demonstrates that Berneslai Homes delivers a resident involvement service that is accessible to all and which has a customer led impact on service delivery. Key areas which were highlighted by TPAS at the inspection in January included: Equality and diversity being embedded in the organisation; an excellent and understandable complaints procedure; local housing agreements setting out rights and responsibilities were seen as good practice and the Impact Teams very accessible, approachable and sorting out issues as they arise at a local level.
Speaking at the event Customer Services and Engagement Manager Sarah Barnes added, “Customer interests are at the core of everything we do and we are delighted to receive this external accreditation which confirms that we take resident involvement very seriously and put our customers first. I would like to thank our customers who have given up their time voluntarily to help.”
Berneslai Homes have also recently become a friend of the Tenants and Residents Organisations of England (TAROE) and were presented with a plaque at the event by Chair of TAROE Michael Gelling (pictured right).

Notes to editors
TAROE is the only recognised representative and national organisation of its kind in England. We are a tenant led organisation that is open to all tenants in the social housing sector. Our members represent over 4 million people, bringing together the direct knowledge, experience and expertise of tenants themselves. TAROE therefore has unique knowledge and understanding of tenants’ needs, of what works and what is likely to be of most help to tenants.
TAROE aims to secure equal rights for all tenants. We aim to improve the quality, accessibility and affordability of social housing, and to improve and protect the quality of life, social and environmental conditions for everyone in our local communities.
