Last week Berneslai Homes delivered the first Junior Warden Scheme in the Tankersley area of Barnsley. The scheme proved to be a great success with pupils taking part from Tankersley Primary School.
During the scheme the young people completed two week sessions with each organisation: South Yorkshire Fire Service, South Yorkshire Police, Safer Neighbourhood Team, Neighbourhood Pride and Berneslai Homes.
The Berneslai Homes sessions were co-ordinated by their Impact Team and Community Engagement Officer and involved the Junior Wardens interviewing residents from Glebe Court Sheltered Housing Scheme, where they gained an understanding of the differences and benefits of living in a house and living in a sheltered scheme. They also took part in a void property inspection to understand what a council property has to look like before it can be let to a new tenant and took part in an estate walkabout in Tankersley. Their findings were passed onto the Impact Team for them to action.
Berneslai Homes Community Engagement Officer Leon Sidebottom adds, “The scheme was a great success and the school was really pleased with what the young people gained from the variety of sessions and they learnt a lot about how the individual services operate. It also gave Berneslai Homes the opportunity to bring together different generations from the community.”
Berneslai Homes have now successfully delivered a Junior Warden Scheme in each of their eight impact areas across the borough.
