We have recently launched the ‘Food Aware Project’ at four of its Community Centres in Hoyland.
The ‘Food Aware Project’ is a food redistribution project run by volunteers. This involves collecting surplus food from a local food distribution centre and delivering it to the community centres. Food bags containing healthy food such as bread, pasta, peppers and tomatoes are given out. The only charge is £1 for entry into a raffle to go towards delivery and collection. Each person also receives light refreshments and can partake in a game of bingo as well as having a get together with friends and neighbours.
Community Buildings Officer Sylvia Cox adds, “The sessions have so far have been very well attended by young and old alike and everyone has been content with their bag. There is only so much surplus food so it’s a good idea to get there early to avoid disappointment.”
The Food Aware Project is held weekly at the following Community Centres: Sunrise Manor every Thursday from 1 -4pm, Meadow View on Wednesday from 10am – 12pm, Kirkview every Thursday from 10am -12pm and Hillcrest every Thursday from 10am -12pm.
