Our partner Inspace have this week (23 April) helped residents of Saville Court Sheltered Housing Scheme in Hoyland raise nearly ₤500 for cancer research. The 30 female residents, aged between 70 and 90, were unable to take part in Cancer Research UK’s 5 km Race for Life, in which thousands of women in the UK participate annually up and down the country.
But keen to contribute they organised their own 1 km “Walk for Life” at Hoyland. Inspace became involved when Peter Weston, gas fitter found out about the event when working at Saville Court.
Knowing that his female colleagues were competing in the Race for Life at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield this June, he suggested that the firm help out with the Walk for Life.
In an inspired role reversal, seven women from Inspace took part, walking with the residents, including Jessica Day-Stewart an apprentice joiner and Raegan Lee-Golding an apprentice plumber. They were supported by three male colleagues who served tea and refreshments.
Although many of the residents suffer from poor sight and poor mobility, the majority walked the route unaided. This included the eldest participant, Jean Burgess, 90 who walked the entire route on her own.
Marie Hunton, Scheme Warden at Saville Court said, "I’d like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to everyone who supported the event, it was a great achievement for everyone who took part."
Leigh Garbutt, Community Engagement Officer, of Inspace adds,"The girls did a really good job for a very worthy cause with great enthusiasm. We are proud to be backing Barnsley all the way."
Inspace are part of the Willmott Dixon Group and carry out maintenance and repairs on nearly 8,000 homes for Berneslai Homes.
