Wombwell Junior Warden Scheme has been shortlisted for best community partner for this year’s South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Awards.

The scheme is run by Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) in partnership with Berneslai Homes, South Yorkshire Police, Barnsley Council and the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Team from Brampton Fire Station.   It is supported by local schools & Wombwell Community Partnership, with funding from the Big Lottery.

Wombwell Junior Warden scheme gives young people from the primary schools in Wombwell the opportunity to meet and make new friends before their transition to High School.  They learn what it means to be a good citizen, how to stay safe and why they should take pride in their local community.
The scheme aims to help build confidence and self esteem and give young people an experience they would not normally have, by working with officers and people from local community groups.

The scheme begun in April 2008 and was due to finish in February 2009.  Due to its success and popularity further funding has been allocated for the scheme to run until July 2009 and will involve a total of 360 young people.

Each junior warden completes a 12 hour programme of 6, 2 hour sessions with each partner involved in the scheme. Activities which are carried out include:  learning about fire safety, first aid, road safety, environmental and community issues and working with elderly residents in  sheltered housing
schemes.

Wombwell SNT’s Martin Kenworthy adds,”It is a great honour that the scheme has been shortlisted for the award and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will win the award at the awards evening on 5th March.”
