Worsborough Common Primary School help regenerate their area

Pupils from Worsborough Common Primary School bury their time capsuleWorsborough Common Primary School held a celebration event on the 3rd June to mark the start of a major regeneration project in Worsborough Common.   Berneslai Homes, South Yorkshire Housing Association, Crucible Homes and local community groups attended the event and displayed information about the scheme and were on hand to answer any questions.

The development on Mount Vernon Avenue, Worsborough Common, will be the site of 20 newly built homes constructed by social housing contractor Bramall Construction, in partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association and Berneslai Homes.  The new build site is due to be completed in December 2009 and is a mixture of houses and bungalows of which 16 will be for rent and the remaining four will be for shared or private ownership.

Worsborough Common Primary School, who have been a key partner to the regeneration have been keen to get the pupils involved in the development.  The pupils actively took part in the celebration event and put forward their ideas to help design a piece of land into the school entrance, where the caretaker’s house used to stand. The pupils have already designed the entrance sign which will be a feature of the entrance garden once the regeneration is complete. This will give all pupils the opportunity to share their ideas and provide input into the regeneration of their school and community.

On 1st June a group of pupils from the school and officers from Berneslai Homes completed an estate walkabout.  They looked at future plans for regeneration in the area and discussed what they thought was good and bad about the community.  The young people took photos for a time capsule which has been buried in the school grounds.  In the future they will be able to look back and see the positive difference and influence to the community that the regeneration has made.

Environmental works are also ongoing in the area which include, new boundary walls, attractive ironwork and off the road parking.

Director of Assets, Regeneration and Construction, Stephen Davis adds,” We are delighted that local young people are getting involved in the regeneration of their local area.  They have been extremely enthusiastic and have come up with some great ideas.”
