A new housing scheme by Yorkshire Housing in partnership with Barnsley Council and Berneslai Homes is set to provide 66 new affordable sustainable homes in the New Lodge area of the town.
The scheme will see existing difficult to let and unsustainable housing stock which is managed by Berneslai Homes on behalf of Barnsley Council, replaced with a brand new development of highly sustainable homes, helping tenants save money on their energy and utility bills.
In total, around 150 new homes have been ear marked for the area and are being developed over a split phased development schedule. Phase 1 began on-site in March 2009 and is set to complete by the middle of 2010.
Phase 1 of the development has so far received £2.8 million of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency, with Yorkshire Housing contributing the remaining amount.
Mervyn Jones, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Housing said of the development: “We are committed to providing our customers with high quality new homes and by working in partnership with Berneslai Homes and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council we have been able to bring sustainable housing to New Lodge.
”In providing the very best in housing technology and support to our tenants we help make a positive difference in their lives and their communities.”
The Mayor of Barnsley Councillor John Parkinson added, ”It has been an honour to be at New Lodge on this really good day for the sod cutting of these new homes. This is part of a major regeneration programme which will see huge benefits to the area and to the local community for many years to come. This has been made possible thanks to partnership work between Barnsley Council, Yorkshire Housing, Berneslai Homes and the local community”.
Helen Jaggar, Chief Executive, Berneslai Homes said ” I am pleased to be here on this exciting day. Working in partnership with local residents and partners has enabled this development to become a reality in building new affordable and sustainable homes for rent.”
Joel Owen, Development Project Manager of Yorkshire Housing, said: “The new homes will be built to extremely high environmental standards and have been designed to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes (3***). This means they will be extremely energy efficient and customers may save 50% or more off their current energy bills.”
