Barnsley Flood Fair 3 years after the floods

Berneslai Homes attend the Barnsley Flood FairBerneslai Homes took part in the Barnsley Flood Fair on Tuesday 15 June, at the Metrodome.  The event was open to the community of Barnsley and was timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the June 2007 floods, when many borough residents and businesses suffered severe hardship following unprecedented amounts of rainfall.

Almost 1000 homes and local businesses were damaged by the floods, along with 46 schools and several major roads.  Over 70 council properties, a private gypsy site and two care homes were affected.   The Berneslai Homes recovery programme included:  Special community centres for cooking and washing, the delivery of food parcels, the placing of 8000 regular sandbags and 16 two tonne versions in the first week alone, gas and electric safety checks, door to door damage assessment and refurbishments and a hardship scheme which supplied cookers, fridges, tables and chairs to the hardest hit.  Barnsley Floods in 2007

Berneslai Homes Chief Executive Helen Jaggar says, “The exhibition was a huge success and showcased the hard work and great way we, the Council and our partners worked together to ensure everyone was safe and returned to their homes as quickly as possible.”
