Barnsley Council has published a free guide for parents, which highlights the help available to families to cover various costs linked to children attending school or nursery.
The new guide, ‘Benefits for Families with Children at School’, offers advice on free school meals, school trips, travel, social security benefits, tax credits, education maintenance allowance, as well as how to get help if a person is thinking of returning to work. The main aim of the guide is to make sure parents don’t miss out on help that is rightly theirs. The user friendly guide gives them information about the different types of support available to families and tells parents how they can access it.
The council will be distributing the guide to all children attending Barnsley primary schools, children’s centres or nurseries in the first instance. They will then expand the circulation to young people in the borough’s secondary schools. Copies will also be given to children as they enter the schooling system so that parents are aware of the help available from day one.
