An event was held on Wednesday 24th March to celebrate the completion of phase one of a planned redevelopment scheme, to build 20 new high quality affordable homes at Mount Close and the former Frederick Place site in Worsbrough Common, Barnsley. The scheme has been project managed by Berneslai Homes in conjunction with South Yorkshire Housing Association and the Council.
The properties are a mix of 2 and 3 bedroomed houses and 5 bungalows, one of which is a 3 bedroomed fully adapted disabled unit. This has been purpose built to accommodate a resident and his son who were affected by demolition proposals and are both wheelchair users. At the event Mr Derek Oldham was presented with a bouquet of flowers to welcome him into his new home by Helen Jaggar, Chief Executive of Berneslai Homes and local ward members, Councillor Bowden and Councillor Price. Mr Oldham said,” I am so pleased with my new home it is fantastic. My son and I have never had as much space to move around.”
To move towards the Governments target of zero carbon by 2016, 15 of the properties have been built as Eco homes. These properties will include environmentally friendly features including, solar panels, good sound insulation, low water use fittings and low energy lights throughout.
The properties will be available for rent and Homebuy and will be owned by South Yorkshire Housing Association and rented units will be allocated in conjunction with Berneslai Homes. The homes have been built by contractor Bramalls.
The development has been complimented by decent home to Council properties carried out by Berneslai Homes and environmental improvements including new boundary walls, off road parking and landscaping works funded by successful bids made by the Council’s strategic housing team. Further demolitions and new build properties are planned over the next 2 to 3 years in Worsbrough Common.
Chief Executive Helen Jaggar added, ” I am delighted to be here on such an exciting day, to see the completion of these new affordable homes for rent. This has been made possible thanks to the great partnership working between local residents, the Council, South Yorkshire Housing, Bramalls and Berneslai Homes.”
Intervention throughout Worsbrough is a long term commitment for Berneslai Homes and Barnsley Council. Berneslai Homes Worsbrough Project Team, led by Mel Asquith, continue to ensure that the community are fully involved throughout and that Berneslai Homes, the Council and all their partners work together to ensure success.
