Cost of running your home

Cost of running your homeIf this is your first time you will be setting up a home and managing household bills you need to think about the things you will need to start with:

Once you have set up a home there will be regular bills to pay including:

How do I work out how much money I will need?

How do I know how much my bills will be?

I can’t afford new furniture and all the other items I need - what do I do?

Be aware of loan sharksDon’t be tempted to borrow from a doorstep seller or illegal money lender to buy things. The interest rates charged are very high and this can make it difficult to pay off the loan. Avoid furniture stores that charge high rates of interest. You will pay more than is shown on the price ticket.

There are a number of Charity Stores with good quality second-hand furniture, and white goods within the Barnsley area:

  • Barnsley Hospice, Doncaster Road, Stairfoot, Barnsley.
  • British Heart Foundation on Peel Street, Barnsley.

Ask if any members of your family have furniture they no longer want or need.

Budgeting Loans

budgeting loans If you are receiving Income Support, Income-based Jobseekers Allowance or Pension Credits, you may be able to apply for a budgeting loan to pay for essential furniture. These are interest free, so you only pay back the amount you borrowed.
