Barnsley Safeguarding Children Board has established the necessary processes for looking into the circumstances when a child (up to 18th birthday) dies. These responsibilities are laid out in Chapter 7 of the statutory guidance "Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010"
This work can involve a wide range of professionals, depending on the circumstances, and involves two interrelated processes:
• A rapid response by a group of key professionals who come together for the purpose of enquiring into and evaluating each unexpected death of a child; and providing support or establishing that the family are being supported in their grief.
• An overview of all child deaths undertaken by a panel
It is hoped that by developing a better understanding of child deaths, more effective prevention strategies can be developed to safeguard children.
