Article: Community events
We are pleased to get involved with the community through various events throughout the year. Following are some of the activities we get involved in:
LGBT History Month – Held in February every year, Berneslai Homes’ supports the events hosted by Barnsley LGBT Forum. In 2012, we took part in the launch of the Rainbow Tick, an award for LGBT inclusive practice, when Bernelsai Homes received the Rainbow Tick Gold Award. We also hosted a display about LGBT History in the foyer of Gateway Plaza for 10 days, including information about LGBT people through history and a quiz from Stonewall, the leading national charity for LGB people.
Refugee Week - This takes place annually in late June. In partnership with other organisations, we hold events during the week, culminating in a community event on the final Saturday. These have been held at Cannon Hall, in Mandela Gardens, and in Barnsley Town Centre. There is always entertainment, food, information and interaction. In 2011, communities demonstrated their crafts, and Berneslai Homes hosted someone demonstrating “Wycinanki”, the Polish art of intricate paper cutting.
All Barnsley Diversity Festival - A festival held in Barnsley for 9 years, this is a landmark event in Barnsley’s calendar, which Berneslai Homes is proud to support. It celebrates the different communities and cultures that live in Barnsley through a high quality programme of professional and community arts activities. Berneslai Homes encourages all our customers to get involved and enjoy all that is on offer. Each year the festival has many opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests to take part the festival events, details of which can be found on the Barnsley live website at www.barnsleylive.co.uk . (Which also contains details of other events all through the year.)
World AIDs Day - 1st December every year is World AIDs Day, and Berneslai Homes works closely with +me, a local organisation supporting people living with HIV and AIDs, to raise awareness. We have held events in the workplace and worn red ribbons to show our support.
In December 2011, Dave Fullen, one of our Directors, spoke at an event at Barnsley College organised by +me, and Berneslai Homes had an information stand at the exhibition. Over 200 young people learned more about HIV and AIDs through the event. To learn more about +me, see the information leaflets below, and follow the link to the website: www.plusme.org
