Article: How could I become a Board member?
There are three kinds of Board Members: independents, council nominees and tenant representatives.
Board Member vacancies are advertised in the local media and on the Berneslai Homes website.
If you apply for a vacancy you will receive a copy of the job description and personal specification and each applicant must show they meet a certain level of skills and this is called our "threshold interview". If you demonstrate that you have these skills at interview you will go forward to the next stage.
Tenant Board Members are selected by a ballot of all Berneslai Homes’ tenants. (They must be Berneslai Homes’ tenants). Independent Board Members are selected by an interview process. They have professional skills that the organisation needs, such as legal, financial and development skills.
Council nominees also go through the threshold interview and then Barnsley Council considers who they wish to nominate to the Board.
Board members are appointed for a three year term and can serve a maximum of three terms ie. Nine years in total on the Board. The Chair of the Board is appointed through an external interview process, independently of the Board.
