Article: Junior Wardens make an impact!

Keresforth Road Primary pupils collect their certificates for taking part in the Junior Warden Scheme.
Pupils at Keresforth Road Primary recently completed their first Junior Warden Scheme, which was a great success.

The scheme was delivered with a multi-agency approach that involved the Primary School, South Yorkshire Fire Service, South Yorkshire Police, Safer Neighbourhood Team, elected members and Berneslai Homes.

Each organisation led their own sessions to help the young people understand the issues that affect their local community.

Impact Officers Suzy Browne & Joanne Pettinger were involved in delivering the sessions for Berneslai Homes along with the Community Engagement Officer, Leon Sidebottom.

During the sessions the young people completed real inspections of void properties and also completed an estate walkabout looking for things like untidy gardens, graffiti and litter. All of their findings from the walkabout are to be acted upon by the Impact Team involved, therefore ensuring that the young people have a direct and positive impact on their local community.

Miss King, Learning Mentor, the supporting adult from Keresforth Primary School said; “The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, especially the estate walkabout as a number of our children live within the community. They were able to make suggestions as to how it could be improved with the confidence that they were being listened to and that action would be taken.”

The scheme was a great success and the young people involved gained a better understanding of the role of Berneslai Homes and their impact staff, working in partnership and the importance of making a positive contribution to their local community.
