Artist impression of Vernon Crescent, Ward GreenBarnsley Council working in partnership with Berneslai Homes have secured funding to build 76 new council homes for rent – the first in the Borough for almost thirty years. The Investment and Regeneration Team took the lead on behalf of the council to bid for money from the Homes & Communities Agency through an initiative called the Local Authority Challenge Fund. Barnsley was in competition with Local Authorities across the country for the funding and was one of only 6 councils in the Yorkshire & Humberside region to secure funding.

Work on site at Vernon CrescentThe five schemes will bring a total investment in new housing of almost £10 Million. In addition to the new homes the developments will also offer employment opportunities for local people.

The first scheme at Vernon Crescent, Ward Green of 16 apartments has already started on site. Helen Jaggar Chief Executive of Berneslai Homes said: “This new development will provide more choice for our customers on our waiting lists, will be great for the local community and will contribute to wider regeneration initiatives we are leading on in the Worsbrough area.”

Four more schemes will follow this year at:

Grange Close, Brierley - 12 bungalows for older people.

Councillor Bill Newman, Cabinet Spokesperson for Development said, “This is great news for the people of Barnsley as it will compliment our drive to provide high quality affordable housing across the borough.”

In addition to the new homes, Berneslai Homes have worked closely with the Council to secure  funding to refurbish the Gypsy and Travellers site at Smithies. This will enable us to provide  thirty pitches with kitchen and bathroom facilities.

All the new homes will be ready for letting by Spring 2011 and will be let through the Council’s Homeseeker scheme. If you would like to know more about these or other regeneration projects, you can contact the Investment and Regeneration Team on 01226 772700.
