In celebration of Older People’s Day on 1st October our Community Buildings Team have held events across the borough to bring together residents from our Independent Living Schemes and members of the wider community.
Shipcroft Close, Wombwell residents enjoyed a quiz and a few ‘old school’ games followed by a lovely lunch. New to the Community Buildings Team, this was one of the first opportunities for Liz Barnes to meet residents and learn more about how we work with and support the residents who use our communal facilities.
Saville Court, Hoyland Common residents brushed up on their crafting skills and learned how to make a brooch from colourful fabrics. In a relaxed environment attendees reminisced and talked about the craft skills they used in days gone by with everyone commenting on how much they had enjoyed the opportunity to sew again and everyone came away with a hand stitched pin badge.
Other events included: a 100 years of council housing presentation at Pendon House, Penistone; coffee morning at Sunrise Manor, Platts Common; and a quilting class at Pollyfox, Dodworth.
Community Buildings Manager, Jill Barker adds: “All the events were well attended with individuals enjoying friendly conversation with people they hadn’t spoken with before. It was nice to see residents who hadn’t attended before and form new friendships which really helps to improve our resident’s health and wellbeing.
National Older People’s Day is a campaign we are always happy to support and celebrate. We are holding activities on or around 1st October to promote healthy life styles, and are always looking for opportunities to combat loneliness and encourage sharing skills and ideas with different generations.
