Green energy

We have undertaken significant works over the past few years installing Solar PV panels, Air Source Heat Pumps, Ground Source Heat Pumps and Biomass Boilers. This contributes to the Council’s Green Agenda to cut carbon emissions and help to minimise our customers utility bills.

Here’s what we’ve done……

  • Fitted over 350 Solar PV installations to suitable properties in the Dearne and Dodworth areas. These panels generate electricity during daylight hours helping with our customers electricity bills. In addition, a partnership between BMBC, Berneslai Homes, British Gas Solar and Gen Communities has seen 321 Solar PV installations to suitable properties across the Borough as part of the “Energise Barnsley” programme.  This programme, together with available Government funding has also seen the recent installation of a small number of storage batteries linked to Solar PV installations.
  • Installed over 600 Air Source Heat Pumps to suitable properties as part of Barnsley Homes Standard works. These are highly energy efficient units which take heat energy from the air (even in winter) and convert it to heat for your home. This will be an on-going programme for suitable properties via the Barnsley Homes Standard programme.
  • We currently have Commercial Ground Source Heat Pumps systems operating at eight district/ communal heating schemes across the borough. These systems provide heating and hot water to 242 homes.
  • We currently have Commercial Biomass Boilers operating at nine district/ communal heating schemes across the borough. These systems provide heating and hot water to 745 homes.

In addition to these measures, we have installed heat meters to all properties on communal heating systems. These give each tenant full control of the heating and hot water provision in their home and only pay for the heat they actually use.
