Tenant Board Member

Want your voice to be heard? Become a Tenant Board Member at Berneslai Homes

If you’ve ever thought “things could be better if tenants had more say” this is your chance to do something about it.

Are you a Berneslai Homes tenant or leaseholder who cares about making things better for tenants and communities across Barnsley?

We’re looking for a Tenant Board Member to join our Board. You don’t need any previous Board experience. What matters most is your lived experience, your perspective, and your willingness to speak up.

If you’d like to learn more about being a Tenant Board Member we’ll also be talking about the role at our Customer Panel on 20 April, where we’ll share some information and answer questions.

Tenant Board Member

Why this role matters

As a Tenant Board Member, you’ll sit at the table where important decisions are made. You’ll help challenge us, hold us to account, and make sure we’re really listening to tenants. Your voice will help shape how services are delivered and how homes and neighbourhoods improve. You’ll be helping make sure that decisions reflect what matters to people who actually live in our homes.

You’ll be supported every step of the way

We know joining a Board can feel daunting and that’s why we offer a full support package including:

  • A warm welcome and full induction.
  • Training to build your confidence and skills.
  • A tailored development programme.
  • A dedicated mentor from the Board.

This is a real opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and develop experience that can open doors in the future. Don't just take our word for it - hear from Rebecca, one of our current Board members.

Who we’re looking for

You might be right for this role if you:

  • Are a Berneslai Homes tenant or leaseholder.
  • Want your voice, and other tenant voices to be heard.
  • Care about fairness, openness, and improving services.
  • Are willing to learn and ask questions.

We actively welcome applications from people who are underrepresented in leadership including younger tenants, disabled people, people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ people, and anyone who brings a different perspective.

What’s involved?

  • Around 30 days a year (including meetings and preparation).
  • Payment of £3,774 per year.
  • Board and committee meetings (some can be attended remotely).

You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be you.
