Berneslai Homes is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the following non-compliances listed below.

PDFs published before September 2018

We do have some remaining PDF documents, published on this website before 23 September 2018 that we need to keep and that are not accessible. This is usually due to the size of the document, the complexity and whether we have an original version that was produced by Berneslai Homes.

In most cases there’s page content that matches what is contained in the PDFs and where this is not the case we provide advice about how users can get this information and advice in alternative ways. The cost of fixing this limited issue is a disproportionate burden.

Our eforms are built and hosted through third party software and ‘skinned’ to look like our website.

However, we’re aware that the external eform site www.forms. berneslaihomes.co.uk has several known and complex to resolve accessibility issues.

The site has a separate accessibility statement which advises how users can access services using alternative formats.

We’ve assessed the cost of fixing the issues with our eform site. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. Therefore, we will be replacing our eforms so they will be fully compliant.

The following content is exempt from the accessibility regulations. We'll consider any requests for accessible versions of this content at our discretion.

Our tests include:

  • an automated testing tool provided by Siteimprove to test every published page on our website
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro to test and fix PDF documents
  • human testing for usability

We run a full automated accessibility test on our website each week and fix any issues that are found. If any issues take longer to fix, we'll publish details of them on our accessibility statement.

We intend to introduce more manual (human) testing to support our routine tests. We're looking at organisations that can help us to develop and carry out some robust manual testing.

Phone

We use a telephone translation service which allows us to communicate with tenants quickly and easily in their own language. The service supports over 230 languages and dialects.

We arrange a three-way telephone conversation where interpreters accurately and securely pass on information between the tenant (using their own language) and Berneslai Homes staff.

This is a service we can arrange either on demand or by appointment.

Face to face

We use a face to face translation service in a customer’s home or at another convenient location.  This sometimes takes us up to five days to arrange.

In writing

Translating into foreign languages takes time, is expensive, and often does not resolve the customer’s enquiry, and so we don’t usually offer written translations. If needed we will translate legal documents, such as a notice to end a tenancy.

Making services accessible to everyone

We’re committed to providing excellent service to all our customers and we work hard to put equality, diversity, and inclusion at the heart of everything we do.

We always check how our policies and services affect different groups of people. This is a process called ‘equality impact assessment.’  We use the findings of these assessments to change a policy or develop services so that they meet the needs of everyone.

A key part of our commitment to equality is to prioritise our work in partnership with customers and staff, and we put this into an equality action plan. We review this every year, with our customer diversity advisory panel and staff diversity champions, who review the action plan every three months.

If you feel a policy or service discriminates against a particular group of people, or you want to know more about how we’ve assessed a particular policy or service, please let us know by emailing customerservices@berneslaihomes.co.uk
