Staying safe during the festive season

Published: 08/12/2025
We're dreaming of a safe Christmas

As we enjoy the festive season with our friends and loved ones, it’s important to make sure your home is safe, by following the useful advice below.

Electrical safety

Make sure you’re not on the naughty list this Christmas by being aware of the different dangers and day-to-day tips to help you stay safe. For example, it’s vital that you:

  • don’t try to repair any faulty festive lights
  • buy electrical goods from a trusted UK retailer
  • don’t overload extension cables with lots of plugs

We carry out electrical testing every five years, fixing any faults and making sure your home is safe. It’s important that you keep all appointments and let us into your home so we can carry out the checks.

If you fail to give us access, we’ll take all steps to meet our legal obligations. This may involve taking formal and legal action against you so that we can gain access to your property. Any costs incurred from taking formal action will be charged to you.

Safety during power cuts

During a power cut please make sure you unplug all devices, use flashlights instead of candles, and call 105 who will put you in touch with your local network operator.

For extra support and advice in a power cut, consider registering for the free Priority Services Register.

Fire safety

While you’re having a catch-up with loved ones this festive period, follow these top tips to stay safe and reduce the risk of a fire:

  • don't leave candles unattended
  • don't leave festive lights on overnight
  • keep your Christmas tree away from radiators and fireplaces
  • test your smoke alarms regularly
  • don't cook after drinking alcohol
  • never leave cooking unattended
  • double check your oven, hob and grill are switched off after cooking

In the event of a fire:

  • Tell everyone in your home that the smoke alarm is going off, then make your way to your escape route.
  • Keep doors closed to slow the spread of the fire, giving you extra time to get out.
  • Once you're safe outside, please call 999 for the fire service.

Home contents insurance

We don't cover your contents as part of your tenancy agreement, so it's important to get home contents insurance in case your belongings are damaged by a fire, flood or another unexpected event. The My Home Contents Insurance Scheme offers a policy that's been specifically designed for social housing tenants.
