Staying safe in hot weather
With high temperatures expected this week, the Met Office has issued an amber alert for extreme heat, and the UK Health Security Agency has issued a heat-health alert for Yorkshire and the Humber, indicating a significant risk to people’s health.
Across the UK, there’s expected to be travel disruption, increased pressure on health care services and risks to vulnerable residents.
Remember these tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe:
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive amounts of caffeine or alcohol.
Keep your home cool: Close curtains during the day and open windows at night.
Dress to stay cool: Wear lightweight, loose clothing and pop on a hat.
Use sunscreen: Apply it regularly throughout the day and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Check on others: Keep an eye on those who may be at extra risk from the heat, such as older relatives or young children, taking care to watch out for signs of heatstroke. The NHS has helpful guidance on keeping young children safe.
Avoid direct sunlight: Try to avoid this if possible, especially between 11am and 3pm when UV levels are highest.
If you feel unwell, move to a cool place, drink water and try to cool your body down. Call 111 if you need medical support.
