Reduce the risk of a fire during a heatwave

Heatwaves increase the risk of accidental fires in gardens and outdoor spaces around homes. During hot weather, dry grass, foliage, and other garden waste can ignite more easily. Barbeques and garden fires can quickly get out of control.

During 2025-26, we had seven reported cases of accidental garden fires. Two of these were caused by burning garden waste, and four caused by discarded cigarette butts. Another instance was caused by a pane of glass that was left against dry vegetation directly in the sunlight.

Deliberate fires can also have serious consequences and increase the risk of an uncontrollable fire. Last year, we received five reported cases of garden waste and wheelie bins being set alight.

Removing garden waste in your home

Hot and dry weather can help a fire spread more quickly, so it's important to reduce the risk of items that can catch fire. It's part of your tenancy agreement to make sure your garden is kept clean and tidy.

Keep you and others safe by following our useful advice:

• Don't have garden fires or burn rubbish.

• Put leaves and other garden waste in your green bin.

• Keep your home and garden free from rubbish and clutter.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have also shared some guidance on how to prevent summer fires.

Safe use of barbecues

During warm weather it’s tempting to use a barbecue, but it can be a serious fire risk if it isn’t used properly. Here are some safety tips when having barbecues:

• Don't use them in extreme weather.

• Always keep your barbecue clean and maintained.

• Check your barbecue is safe to use and never leave it unattended.

• Keep children away from barbecues.

• Keep barbecues away from fences, sheds, and trees.

• Always place barbecues on flat surfaces that aren't flammable.

• Always keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies.

• Make sure your barbecue cools down properly.

• Empty ashes onto garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. If they're hot, they can melt the plastic and cause a fire.

Staying safe together

We recently welcomed South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to Albion House in Barnsley town centre for a comprehensive fire safety exercise.

The fire service performed simulated rescues from the 4th floor and 6th floor of the building, giving firefighters important knowledge and learning about high rise scenarios.
