Garden Competition 2024

Our Garden Competition is back for another year and after the success of last year’s competition which focused on helping wildlife, we’re now encouraging you to make best use of your small spaces. 

The competition is open to all Berneslai Homes tenants, and we still have many of our traditional categories for the more established gardeners among us. No matter what your age, experience or the size of your garden, everyone can take part. 

Having a small garden doesn't mean losing the joy of gardening. In fact, it's an opportunity to let your imagination flow and maximise every inch of your outdoor space. Whether you have a bigger garden, small patio, a balcony, or a tiny terrace, there are plenty of ways to be creative! 

This year we also have a new way for tenants to get involved whether you’re entering our competition or not, with our ‘Tenants Choice Award’ where you’ll be able to vote for your favourite garden from the shortlist on our social media channels. 

Our 2024 categories are: 

• Best Garden  
• Best Planter/Hanging Basket  
• Tallest Sunflower (Under 16s) 
• Best Independent Living Scheme Garden 
• NEW Tenants’ Choice Award  
• NEW Best Small Spaces Garden  
• NEW Best Garden Feature (can include bug hotels) 

Our annual garden competition is always a popular event in the calendar and showcases the best-kept gardens from all over Barnsley. Our neighbourhood teams have been out and about recently with our new compliment cards recognising tenants’ well-maintained gardens. They will also be encouraging you to enter the garden competition so keep an eye out for our calling cards. 

Dave Fullen, Director of Customer and Estate Services, said: “It’s always lovely to see the wonderful gardens on show. We’re excited to see how tenants have been creative and are making the best use of their spaces both big and small. Good luck to everyone entering.” 

The closing date for entries is 12noon Monday 24 June. Please use our online form to tell us which categories you’d like to enter, upload your photographs for judging, and to share your contact details. Tenants who aren’t able to take their own photographs can request a home visit by indicating this on the form. Visits will take place between Tuesday 25 June and Friday 5 July by appointment.
